Tidbits of The Truth by Ashley McFarlin Buie

Philippians 4:13

For I can do all things through Jesus Christ,

who strengthens me.

Every now and then, I have a small Bible study session at my house
with friends.  It’s usually unplanned but ALWAYS on time.  Last week,
a couple of friends came by the house to hang and we decided to do a
little Bible study while we were together.
One friend suggested we start with Philippians 4:13 because it’s such apopular verse but she has never completely understood what it really means.  We decided to study the entire chapter, verse by verse, so we would have the context of that specific verse and found ourselves getting a big lesson in contentment, peace, and happiness.
Paul speaks in this chapter about how to live in the peace that God intended for us to live in.  Verses 6 & 7 instruct us not to worry about anything and to thank God for all things in prayer.  This is essentially the key to happiness.
This happiness is your Heaven on Earth.  For years I have been talking about how God wants us to live in our blessing NOW.  When we recite the Lord’s Prayer we ask that “thy Kingdom come and Thy Will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.”  We are essentially saying, “Uhm God, I wanna be about THAT life.  I want my Heaven here and now.”
We all want the happiness that has been promised to us in Heaven, so here in this chapter of Philippians, Paul is saying, “ok, take it!”  Take your Heaven and live in it by being happy and staying in Peace: “a Peace beyond ALL understanding”(verse 7). When you live like this you CAN do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens you because your Heaven(His Grace & Mercy) is so much more powerful than this World.
How do you do that, you ask?  Well Paul says in verse 8 to “fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right.  Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”  Or as my friend always says, “change your thoughts; change your life.”
In my Sunday school class yesterday, I told my students to turn their thoughts to things that are working out well in their lives when storms come.  Leave the storms to God to figure out and fix, while you bask in the blessings that he has placed in your life.  As you rejoice and celebrate your life, you are trusting that God is handling the rest.  BOY, does that put a big smile on His face!  He loves you and only wants the best for you.   He is here to fight your battles and when you step out of the way to enjoy the Heaven He has already given you (that you have prayed for), He eagerly steps in to protect you and provide for you.
The Happiness and contentment that you live in will shove any and all negative activity away from you.  Verse 7 even goes as far as to say, “God’s peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Jesus Christ.”
So today, I simply say to you, BE ABOUT THAT LIFE!  Live a Kingdom life today. Don’t let the troubles of this world burden you and smother your light.  Be content in ALL things.  Thank God in the midst of trouble and watch the trouble disappear.  Your Heaven is here.  Your Kingdom has come.
Revel in it and Thank God for it daily.
I Love you,
